About College


The College of Food Science and Engineering of Jilin University has a long history of running schools, which can be traced back to the Animal Husbandry major established in 1978 by Jilin University of Technology, the Animal Food Hygiene Inspection major established by the Peoples Liberation Army Veterinary University in 1980, and the Food Science and Packaging Engineering Institute established by Jilin University of Technology in 1994. In 2009, food science and engineering specialty was the first major in Jilin University to pass the engineering education professional certification of the Ministry of education, and has passed three extension certification so far. In 2011, the school of Quartermaster science and technology of Jilin University was identified as the national defense students training unit by the Chinese people's Liberation Army, and entrusted to cultivate national defense students majoring in food science and engineering. In 2014, the Food Science and Engineering major was selected as one of the first pilot units of the National Excellent Agriculture and Forestry Program.

In 2015, the College of Food Science and Engineering of Jilin University was formally established, and the major of Food Science and Engineering ushered in a golden period of concentrated development. In 2017, the national discipline level evaluation result of Food Science and Engineering discipline was B. In 2018, it was selected as a class A construction discipline of the high-level professional (group) construction project of the "13th Five-Year Plan" of Jilin Province and a class B construction discipline with high-level and first-class characteristics in Jilin Province. In 2019, the college's Food Science and Engineering specialty was approved as a national first-class undergraduate specialty construction site. In 2019, it was approved to establish a mobile post-doctoral research station in food science and engineering.

Teachers

Our college has always been keeping ‘learning for people, learning for teachers and serving the country’ as the idea of education. We have formed complete education system of ‘BSc, MSc, PhD and Post-PhD’. Now we possess 46 full-time teachers, including 17 doctoral supervisors and 29 Master’s supervisors. 70% of the full-time teachers have senior professional titles, 92% have doctor degrees, and over 50% have more than one year experience of working or studying abroad. At present, there are 1 double employed academician, 1 vice chairman of the Teaching Guidance Committee of food science and engineering specialty of colleges and universities of the Ministry of education, 1 new century talent of the Ministry of education, 1 famous teaching tutor of Jilin Province, 1 Top innovative talent of Jilin Province, 1 professional and technical talent with outstanding contribution in Jilin Province, 1 member of spring seedling program of Jilin Province, 2 specially appointed professors of Kuang Yaming or Tang Aoqing of Jilin University, 1 member of Peiying Project in Jilin University, 4 teachers in excellent young teachers training program of Jilin University. Specialty Introduction

The college offers two undergraduate majors in food science and engineering and food quality and safety. It has a first-level discipline doctoral and master's authorization site in food science and engineering, and a first-level discipline postdoctoral research mobile station. The college has formed four distinctive disciplines: functional food biomanufacturing, food chemistry and biotechnology, food safety and quality testing, and agricultural product storage and processing. It has more than 10 professional laboratories for food foundation, food safety, food engineering, food technology, functional food evaluation and food analysis, and 4 pilot production workshops for beer, yogurt, baking and meat products. It has Jilin food science and engineering experimental teaching center, Jilin Key Laboratory of nutrition and functional food, Jilin functional food engineering research center, Jilin high value utilization engineering research center of animal by-products, Jilin food safety engineering research center, Jordan health food R & D center of Jilin University, and Biotechnology Science Popularization base of College of food science and engineering (Northeast China). The total area of the laboratory is more than 8000 square meters, with more than 5000 sets of experimental instruments and equipment, and the total value of the equipment is nearly 100 million yuan.

Research work

The college has undertaken more than 440 scientific and technological projects supported by the 11th Five Year Plan period, the 12th Five Year Plan, the 13th five year plan, the 863 program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of education, Jilin province, as well as the enterprise cooperation, with a total of scientific research expenditure more than 130 million yuan.The college has applied for more than 300 national invention patents, obtained 123 authorized invention patents, and transformed 13 patents. The college has won 20 awards of scientific research, published more than 940 academic papers, including more than 550 SCI retrieval papers, more than 400 other citation times, more than 130 EI retrieval papers, and published 9 academic monographs.

The college adheres to open education and pays attention to international communications. It has established friendly cooperative relations with many internationally renowned universities and scientific research institutions. We actively invite experts and scholars at home and abroad to hold special lectures and participate in international and domestic conferences to enhance professionalism and academic influence. We have successfully held the "Ninth China Egg Technology Conference", "The 3rd International Conference on Food Science and Human Health", "Functional Dairy Products and Health International Conference" and other academic conferences. Every year, about 20% of graduate students and 10% of undergraduates go abroad to study for degrees, joint training or short-term academic exchanges. Every year, nearly 50 experts and scholars go abroad or come to the school to study and give lectures. It maintains close academic contacts with universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries, including Japan, the United States, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and South Korea.

Morality Strengthening

With the core of cultivating talents with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physique, civilization and labor, through culture education, practice education and innovation education, the college has achieved the goal of cultivating high-quality academic and engineering talents in food industry with international vision. We adhere to carry out innovation and entrepreneurship training and social practice exercise, to improve students’ comprehensive quality. We have won the gold medal of the "Creating Youth" National College Student Entrepreneurship Competition, the 13th "Challenge Cup" National College Students Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Competition Special Prize, the National College Student Food Engineering "Virtual Simulation Competition" Final Grand Prize, the first prize of the finals of the 8th National College Student Electronic Business "Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship" Challenge. Graduates are active in the food industry and have become an important driving force for industrial development and technological innovation.

The college carries forward the tradition of excellent student work, adhering to the work concept of "three-three education", implementing the engineering innovation talent training model of "respecting individuality, strengthening ability, and expanding quality", and exploring and constructing engineering students with "knowledge, ideal and ability" as the core work system. The college has been awarded as an advanced unit for student work in the whole school for 6 consecutive years. It has cultivated 13 "Top Ten College Students" and "Self-improvement and Self-supporting College Students" of Jilin University. The students have made remarkable achievements in mathematical modeling, technological innovation competitions including Panpan food cup, Kang Shifu cup, biological experiment skills competition and other competitions.
